ASUP executives meet today on strike

LAGOS — THERE are strong indications that the strike by polytechnics lecturers, under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, may be called off today, as members of  ASUP’s National Executive Council, NEC, hold an emergency meeting, to appraise the situation. The polytechnic lecturers have been on strike for the past 80 days. ASUP Chairman, Dr. Chibuzor Asumogba, while speaking to Vanguard, yesterday, said “there has been a green light on the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) 15. “We have strong reason to believe that CONTISS 15 will soon be implemented. But it is at our National Executive Council (NEC) meeting tomorrow (today) that we will determine whether or not to call off the strike.” The emergency ASUP NEC meeting, which holds at the Labour House in Abuja, is sequel to the intervention of the Joint House Committee on Education into the strike. The committee, the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’i and his Labour and Productivity counterpart, Chief Emeka Wogu, had met with the union on July 9, urging them to call-off the strike. Speaking to News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, earlier in Lagos, Asumogba  said “the NEC is meeting  to appraise the progress made so far, following the meeting held with the committee on education.  We have received a green light on the CONTISS 15 and we have promises here and there on other demands. The committee on education is proactive in addressing our demands. The committee is highly placed and with its members’ integrity, we have no doubt that our demands will be addressed.” It would be recalled that ASUP, among other reasons, went on strike citing the failure of the federal and state governments to implement agreements on issues affecting polytechnic education. ASUP wants a full implementation of CONTISS 15 and a stop to discrimination against holders of the Higher National Diploma. The union is also protesting the absence of a National Polytechnics Commission and the deplorable condition of many polytechnics in Nigeria.

UI students' protest, shutdown commercial activities

IBADAN — STUDENTS of the University of Ibadan, yesterday, paralysed commercial activities in the ancient city when they moved out of campus to protest Federal Government’s alleged insensitivity to myriad of problems in education sector. The angry students went on a peaceful protest to major streets in the city with various placards with inscriptions such as ‘Nigeria: Giant or Dwarf of Africa,’ ‘Education is dead in Nigeria,’ ‘Adieu to education sector in Nigeria,’ among others. During the protest that lasted for hours, vehicular movements were paralysed as motorists going to places like Mokola, Dugbe, Ilorin and other northern parts of the country could not. As a result, commuters, transporters and passengers groaned while trekking long distances. The students called for the resignation of the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai. The  protest was supervised by Divisional Police Officer of Sango, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Akinfenwa, who ensured that hoodlums did not hijack it. Led by SUG President UI, Babatunde Badmus, the students in a communiquĆ© read during the protest, complained about unnecessary establishment of more tertiary institutions in Nigeria while the available ones suffer neglect. They also  called for modernisation of decayed facilities and obsolete style of teaching in tertiary institutions in Nigeria in the best interest of the future of the nation and Nigerians. “While politicians like Chief Obafemi Awolowo spent so much on education our president today, is non-chalant to the extent that he takes pride in jetting out while pressing national issues that need his attention arise. Ruqayyatu Rufai should resign if she lacks the clue to the problem in the education sector. “They take their children out of the country to private universities and cripple public universities in order to deprive the children of the masses right to education. We shall resist this attempt,” the student union leader said.

Suspected killers of a LAUTECH paraded by the police

The Oyo State Police Command on Wednesday paraded Alex Akinyemi, an alleged accomplice in the killing of a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Miss Seun Adaramoye. The remains of Adaramoye were found by passersby near a guest house at Under-G area of Ogbomosho on June 20, 2013. Assistant Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyanganku, Ibadan, Dansuki Galadanchi, said upon investigation, the owner of the guest house where the corpse was found told the police that his security guard was involved in the murder. Galadanchi said, "When the owner of that guest house heard about the incident, he called the CCTV engineer to play back the video camera recording. "He saw where one of his security men, Alex Akinyemi, carried the corpse. He quickly reported the matter to the police. "On the receipt of the case, police swung into action and the security guards, namely Dauda Aliyu and Samuel Ojo, were arrested. "When the CCTV was played back, they (guards) identified the person in the film to be one  Alex Akinyemi, a day guard at the guest house at Under-G area of Ogbomosho." He explained that the security guard was arrested on July 6 in Ogbomosho. He added that the corpse of the student was removed and taken to LAUTECH teaching hospital for post mortem. Galadanchi said efforts were being intensified to arrest the fleeing suspect, Charles Aregbesola, while further investigation was being conducted. The suspect, however, insisted that he was not the killer, saying another man he identified simply as Segun, was responsible. Akinyemi said, "I have been working as a security guard in this guest house for over two months. "I only know Segun aka police, as a resident of that area before I saw him dropping the corpse around 8am that day. "He threatened to kill me with an axe that he was holding that day if I reported him to the  police. He promised to give me N500, 000 but he did not give me." In a related development the SCID paraded a 50 – year-old man, Wajud Akande, for conspiracy, stealing and conversion of goods worth N1.2m. Galadanchi said on  June 5, 2013, Alhaji Lawal Mohammed reported that his co-worker chartered an Iveco truck with registration number XA 487 MGR to convey 4,554 cartons of soaps valued at N9.12m from Apapa, Lagos State to Zaki-Biam in Benue. He said, "But the driver of the truck diverted the goods and sold it at Agbeni market in Ibadan. Upon investigation, Wajud Akande was arrested in his house in Molete, Ibadan were he kept part of the diverted goods."

Strike: Varsity, Poly students protest in Lagos

Hundreds of students of various higher institutions have taken to the streets in Lagos over the lingering strike embarked upon by academic unions in polytechnic and universities.

ASUP/ASUU : Is strike the best option

It seems the most effective way in getting government’s attention on any issue in Nigeria by its
employees and other unions is to embark on industrial action, otherwise called strike.
The strike option is a common phenomenon adopted by many, from truck/tanker drivers, grievances. teachers/lecturers, Judicial workers and transport workers(bus drivers) among others, to air
Surprisingly, strike action is a common occurence in our educational sector as academic and non academic staff resort to it in calling goverment’s attention to their welfare and decay in the system. How effective strikes have been in resolving these issues are highly debated.

3 NYSC members abducted in rivers state, suspects have been arrested

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, said on Monday that five suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of three corps members in Abua/Odual Local Government. Three corps members, identified as Ogechi Martins, Chijioke Richard and Esther Nwachukwu, were kidnapped by hoodlums on Saturday, June 29, 2013 and released a week after. Mbu explained that the suspects, who had been handed over to the anti-kidnapping squad, would soon be charged to court at the end of investigation. The corps members, according to him, have since been handed over to the authorities of the National Youth Service Corps. He told journalists in Port Harcourt that they had to relocate other corps members to Ominima in Abua/ Odual for their safety, saying the Ogonokom Corpers' Lodge was vulnerable. The police commissioner explained that the residence of the corps members was close to a riverside where they could easily be attacked by criminals. Mbu pointed out that the security of the corps members should have been considered before taking them to Ogonokom community. He explained that the command had arrested 61 suspected kidnappers in the state, while eight victims had so far been rescued since he assumed duty as the police commissioner in the state. He said, "Also, 154 armed robbery suspects have been arrested. Forty five cultists and a vandal were arrested and also 89 other suspects when security operatives carried out raids of criminal hideouts in the state. "The feat was achieved between February and June this year. Within the months under review, 20 armed robbers and nine kidnappers were killed by security operatives. Nine armed robbery incidents and six kidnap attempts were foiled by men of the command." Mbu added that men of the command recovered 93 firearms, 2,032 rounds of ammunition, 202 cartridges and 37 vehicles, including motorcycles.

A business admin student of MAPOLY killed by a vigilante

ABEOKUTA — Tragedy struck in Abeokuta, yesterday,  when  men of the Vigilante Service of Ogun State, VSO, reportedly  shot dead  a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Moruf Raji, 29, and a staff of a telecommunication company, MTN Nigeria,  Akeem Usman, 32, while chasing suspected robbers. The  incident occurred at Adigbe, at about 1.00 a.m  when  a team  of the vigilance service allegedly ordered residents of 18A, Sorinola Avenue, Oriyanrin, to open their gate for them to arrest  suspected robbers believed to be hiding in the building. An eye witness told Vanguard that some of the  residents  who were mostly students refused to open  the gate, suspecting the vigilante men to be  robbers  trying to play smart. The witness further explained that  Moruf and Akeem  went out from their rooms and opened the gate for them but one of the men of VSO  opened fire on the two men killing them instantly. Vanguard gathered that men of the VSO  still went ahead to force their way into the compound after shooting the two men and ransacked the rooms, while the victims were bleeding profusely. It was further gathered that, the vigilantes used their patrol vehicle to rush  the victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba Abeokuta where they died following excessive loss of blood. Vanguard  learnt that, Moroof was  a Business Administration student of MAPOLY who was on one-year Industrial attachment and Akeem who was a staff of  MTN that go married seven months ago. According to findings, Akeem worked in  Lagos  but came to Abeokuta to attend  a religious  programme scheduled for 10.00am on Sunday. He was said to have resolved to sleep with a family-friend because of the proximity of the house to the venue of the programme. His driver, Abayomi Awoyajo was also said to have sustained injury  after being battered  by the  members of vigilance during the raid. Narrating the incident  Abayomi said  they were all inside when at about 1.00am ,the vigilante men  came asking  them  to open the door. “We all thought they were armed robbers, we started running helter-skelter, some of us hid in the wardrobe, while some hid under the chairs,” he said. The 30 year old driver, also said  the two victims in pool of their  blood crawled back into the house, crying loud, while the vigilantes  forced their way into the house to  continue dealing with all of them in a brutal matter. “They even asked for brother Akeem’s  car key which I gave to them, but, could not be taken out because of the security device installed in it, we were later rushed to the hospital” he explained. However, as  at the time of  filing this report, all the  members of the vigilante service that were involved in the act  have been arrested by the police from Adigbe station. The  case  was said to have been transferred  to Eleweran Police Headquarters, Abeokuta but the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Muyiwa Adejobi could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.

UNILAG fans defrauded by an impostor impersonating wizkid

Says he hasn’t dumped EME… Becoming a celebrity comes with a lot of challenges and this is a fact, hip-hop star, Ayo Balogun, a.k.a Wizkid, has found out the hard way. Recently, an impostor, impersonating him defrauded his UNILAG fans, prompting the police to invite him(Wizkid) for questioning. The Pepsi ambassador has since shrugged off the experience, but he’s on a mission to ensure it does not repeat itself. In this interview with SHOWTIME CELEBRITY, the artiste talks about his UNILAG saga, fame, new record label and more. Enjoy! What really happened between you and the UNILAG students. You were accused of duping them? By now, I think all is clear that there are some people parading themselves as either Wizkid or his managers. The unfortunate incident regarding the UNILAG students is a case of mistaken identity where people fell victim to some unscrupulous elements who impersonated me or my representatives. The same people, as we have come to know, went as far as creating fake accounts in my name to dupe people. Wizkid I just don’t really want to talk much  about it. There are processes involved in booking Wizkid for shows.  If you want to book Wizkid for a show or anything of the sort, you go to Empire Mates Entertainment, EME, which is my label or you talk to my manager, Godwin Tom. Those  are the main channels to reach me if you want to book me for a show. So,if you’ve been chatting with the Wizkid on the social media and he has  promised to do something or charges you money, I want you to know that Wizkid never charges anybody or does his business directly. I don’t discuss price, I don’t talk about anything like that. I allow my management and my label to handle my business. So, nobody talks directly to me concerning payments. How did you come about the UNILAG palaver? Basically, the police just called us to inform us of the development. We can’t really give full details because we were invited to come to the police station and we went as law abiding citizens. When we got there, we gave our own statement as well as the students. But we really can’t say anything now until the police have done their proper investigations. But with the details on ground, what  we want you to know is that the so-called Wizkid the students have been contacting is fake and an impostor. It’s really not from me or from anybody around me. Do you have a procedure for booking you for shows? Yes, we do. My manager is going to give the proper details, proper emails, the  right phone numbers and other things needed. We are going to definitely make that known. We are going to give full details, so, you will have it. It’s a  simple process. Either you contact me or you contact EME directly. But even when you contact me, the whole procedure is that I will direct you to the booking office as well. It is simple. You send your request via email or you can call us and send us your email address. The booking office would contact you from the email address you have provided with a booking questionnaire. The booking questionnaire seeks information about your event, venue details as well as publicity activities, what you intend to do and other special requests. We don’t really want to give more details so that the impostors would not continue with their fraudulent activities. The email you are talking about that all bookings comes through, is it the same email every communication comes to? No. If you have contacted anybody regarding a Wizkid show, paid and we do not show up for the event or you do not contact the right people; provide the bank account details, provide the email correspondence. If there was a contract, provide the contract – that is as simple as it gets. We are not fighting with anybody. We sympathise with the students who have been duped, but for you to do it properly, for you to get the best information that you need, it is important  to provide the necessary information. In this case, what do you think really happened regarding the procedure? We are letting the police do their job. We have nothing to say because we know very well that we were not the ones they contacted. So, we are not worried. What we are concerned  about is to stop others from being duped by these impostors. What was your first reaction when you heard the news? I felt so bad. I just went to my Twitter account and tweeted the normal people to contact if you want to book a show with Wizkid. Let’s be realistic. Everybody saw my hustle and watched me grow. When I dropped   “Holla Your Boy”, I was much younger and wasn’t charging up to N5 million  for shows. This is just playing out and it is simple. So, how much do you charge now? N5 million is okay for my show. But let’s just put things right. It is so bad to my company’s name and my name as well. That is why I  decided to open up on this issue. What is your relationship with EME at teh moment? We are doing great, we have been having meetings. Going back and forth, evolving new plans to make EME one of the best record labels, not just in Nigeria but also, in Africa . Everyone is in the studio. Banky W. shot a couple of videos recently. We were at the video shoot last week; we are still working. There is this rumour that you are no longer with EME? I have just released an album in collaboration with Wizkid and EME. “Starboy” is my new company, EME is still there for me. “Starboy” is Wizkid’s new record label and I have a couple of producers that are working with me in the new company. Definitely, we are working with a lot of people. Banky W and I, started way back. Our dreams have always been to build an empire, to help more people and give them that platform to showcase their talents. And all these dreams cannot happen only with one person. So, we have to branch out and reach out to more people. The industry is really big and there are more than 5 million kids out there roaming about the street and looking for a platform to showcase their talents. We want to give them the platform to do that. So, as you can see, everyone can contribute to that. Now that “Starboy” has started, we thank God, we are doing well. Anybody can start up something. That is just what we are trying to do with EME. Have you released the track list of your latest album? Yes, I have done that. I featured Olamide, D’banj and Banky W. The album is ready right now. But we are just putting some finishing touches to it. We will be having a listening party of the album very soon and we are going to announce that as soon as it is ready. We are planning for that. The album is coming out very strong and I thank God that I have put all the necessary things in place. I have a very strong belief that the album is going to win awards. How long have you known Mallic? I have known him for quit some time now, about a year and some couple of months. We just talk about business and nothing more. But we took out time and planned something good and we are working on actualising that. This is what I am saying about branching out, giving people platforms to perform. So, I have to give a lot of people that platform. What we are doing together is to set the standard and lead the way for people to follow. Would you say that his production input has redefined your music? Of course, and everybody he has worked with. Even he produces Afrobeat  sometimes. Nobody knows it all. We also produced in the UK, so, it was like me working with him. We are still learning, it is a process. No one knows it all. There is this rumour making the rounds  that you have replaced your accidented Porsche car. Is it true? Yes, that is absolutely true. We thank God for that. We thank Him for sparing my life. This is not the first time I’ve had such an encounter. That doesn’t mean I am a freak, but I needed to be mobile. I was moving around with a taxi all through the duration of the accident which is not proper. Wizkid A whole lot of people have been blowing the accident out of proportion. But how bad was it? Well, I don’t really like talking about the bad side of things. I believe that at some point in life, we all have to learn something good about life, something that would help our life in the future. When I had that accident I was like, I had to check myself and know the things I am not doing right. My mind told me that anything I am doing, I have to do it faster. I was like, if the world had ended that day, what would I have done. I thanked God for keeping me alive to testify his goodness. I made a promise to myself to never get down because of the accident. So, life must go on, no matter what it takes. How has your evolution in the musical world been? It has been massive. I have learnt so much and I have worked with so many legends. It is really mind- blowing. For me, I feel so excited. I am still learning and striving to get to the top. When I look back to where I started, I see a lot of accomplishments. That’s what normally comes to my mind. I also feel blessed, but it goes with a lot of responsibilities. You know, everything is for a while. It is the legacy that you built while you were there that lasts. So, I try as much as possible to leave a legacy so that even when I am not here, people will not forget my name easily. What really prompted you to do a ‘collabo’ with Femi Kuti? Yes, a lot of people never expected that. People think Wizkid talks only about girls, cars  and some flashy things in his music, but I don’t. All I talk about in my music is true life story. When I decided to do “Jayejaye” with Femi, I just really wanted to pass a message of  what Wizkid wants to be or  ways you can be like Wizkid. I still have not done anything, but people think I have done many things. I don’t think I have done a lot, I am still learning. The “Jayejaye” music was just to bridge the gap between the old and the young people. A big shout out to Femi Kuti for giving me the chance to do that track with him. I called him a day before we recorded the track and he allowed me. So, I am just saying a big thank you. So, what should fans expect from your forthcoming album? They should expect everything magical. We have put in a lot of work and we are just hoping that everyone likes the album. I have been in the studio for weeks and even months now. I can’t wait for the album to be released. I hope everybody will like the album. I have just put in a lot of hard work. It’s like you have a passion for flashy cars? No, I don’t think so. A lot of people drive more flashy  cars than I do, even in the entertainment industry. I really don’t think like that. After the accident , I had no other car to drive around. Believe it or not, I moving around with  a taxi and I didn’t like that.  I don’t think that amounts to having passion for flashy cars.  What about people in government that spend so much money on cars? I worked hard to make my money, so I need to use it well. If someone works hard for his money and decides to spend it for his pleasure, I don’t think it is a bad idea. How do you feel  reading stories of some artistes who cannot fend for themselves when they grow old? I have to learn from them and know how to make savings. If I am not learning from people that came before, then what am I  doing? It’s not that anybody is wishing anybody bad, but we must learn and plan ahead.

The lecturers are being unreasonable, says the Minister of Education

On Monday, July 1,  2013, the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on yet another “indefinite strike” for the umpteenth time. Incidentally, the blame being traded is the same. “The Federal Government has refused to implement some of the issues contained in a 2009 agreement it had with us,” or “The government has a penchant for reneging on promises.” The union is also claiming that the strike is aimed at checking the near lack of foreign scholars in our education system and the recurring brain-drain in the sector.

ASUU President Explains Reasons For Strike - Watch the video below

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasir Issa-Fagee has said that the union embarked on the current strike because the Federal Government has only implemented two of the nine issues agreed on since 2009.Mr Issa-Fagee, who was a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, said the government did nothing about the agreement until the union went on strike in 2012.
“On 2nd February 2012, the union decided to suspend that strike on the understanding that the Memorandum of Understanding that we signed with the government will be fully implemented within the shortest possible time,” he said.

UNIJOS lecturers join ASUU strike

The Chairman of the University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. David Jankam, has endorsed the strike embarked upon by the national body of the association. Public universities had embarked on strike on Monday over issues relating to the agreement reached with the Federal Government. Jankam, who spoke at a meeting held at the ASUU Secretariat in Jos on Tuesday, said that after reviewing the situation, the chapter had no option than to align itself with the decision of its national body, pledging to cooperate fully to make the strike effective. The chairman faulted the Federal Government for reneging on the various aspects of the agreement which, he said, left the union with no option than to proceed on an indefinite strike. He solicited the support of members for the strike which he said should be total and comprehensive.
