3 university of uyo students murdered by policemen over transport fare
Several sources have told Reporters
the Nigerian police in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, yesterday shot dead
three protesting students at the University of Uyo.
One source said he was certain only of one casualty, but
the other said the figure was higher.
Eyewitnesses said a peaceful
procession on campus turned violent, leading to the burning
down of the vice chancellor’s office located at Ikpa Road in Uyo

FG Approve 65 Years Retirement Age for Poly Staffs! End of ASUP Poly Strike?
The latest information reaching us is that theMinister for
EducationProf. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i has said the federal government of
Nigeria had approved 65 years retirement age for staff of Polytechnics
and Colleges of Education in Nigeria.
The minister, who disclosed this at the 17th convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri on Saturday, 8th June, 2013 said this followed President Goodluck Jonathan approval and signing into law of the policy, saying it would help reduce the attrition rate and encourage research and development.
Prof. Ruqayyatu also disclosed the declaration of 2013 as the Year of Technical and Vocational Education & Training (TVET) in Nigeria, saying forthe nation to achieve its national objectives, there must be a body of individuals with the skills and competence to support diverse sectors of the economy.
She described Technical and Vocational Education and Training as the onlypart of the education system that has the capacity to do it, saying 51 federal and state polytechnics in the country have benefited from the special intervention fund of N15 billion for the upgrading and rehabilitation of laboratories including training staff.
This is one of the issue in contention, it could be recalled that the President of ASUP, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha disclose to newsmen that talk with the federal government is in progress. we do hope, the strike would be call off soon.

Lagos Releases N63m for Bursary
In a statement Signed by the public Officer of the Lagos State scholarship Board, Mr Awobadejo Adesesan Olusegun, the Director/Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Yetunde Jegede, said 1, 085 students would benefit from the amount.
She, however, enjoined all concerned
students from LASU to visit the Board’s website for further information
and required documents before payment can be effected.
In another development, the Lagos State
Scholarship Board is to start documentation exercise in readiness for
2013 subsequent payments for all beneficiaries of Local Scholarship
award.
The
Lagos State Government approved the sum of One Hundred and Sixty
Million, One hundred and Forty Two Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventeen
Naira, Twelve kobo (N160, 142, 717.12k) as Local Scholarship awards to
indigenes of the State in various tertiary institutions across the
federation.
The Board Secretary implores concerned
students to come for their award with original and photocopies of their
documents which include Scholarship award Letter, School Identity Card,
Two passport photographs, Progress report for the respective year duly stamped and signed by the School Authority.
